BATS is inspired by the work of community groups and individuals protesting the unfair and unethical practices of Botetourt County and Google surrounding the proposed data center project at Greenfield.

Through a broad coalition of organizations and individuals, BATS was formed to financially support and continue that work.

BATS will always help communities to advocate through public comment periods, voting initiatives, and educational campaigns.

Unfortunately, in Botetourt and the Roanoke Valley we have learned that despite serious public risk, elected and appointed officials are only serving the will of one company, Google, and therefore legal efforts are necessary.

The Botetourt Area Transparency Society affectionately takes our name from the endangered Indiana bat and other species that share our beautiful natural landscapes. We are not against sustainable growth - we are against harmful and  extractive companies like Google when they seek to exploit our home and its natural resources
